In 1889 the Paraguay Central Railway Co. Ltd. (FCCP) took over a 5'6" gauged, single tracked, line; the starting point of which was the city of Asuncion. It had just been extended from Paraguari (72 km from Asuncion) to Villarrica (150 km). Plans were already afoot to extend the railway towards the Parana river where a ferry connection would be provided with the Argentinian rail network. In 1891 it had already got as far as Yuty (252 kms), reaching the river-bank town of Encarnacion in July 1911. By 1913, the gauge had been narrowed to 4'8(1/2)" to match that of railways in north-eastern Argentina and the Pacu-Cua ferry connection established, by means of which rolling stock could be interchanged.
