Despite speculation for several months about whether the Browse floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project will go ahead, the partners — Woodside Petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, PetroChina and MIMI - have now signed two key preparatory contracts, giving a strong indication that they want the venture to proceed. Woodside wants to make a final investment decision (FID) in the second half of 2016, with the target to have Browse start production for 2021, when predictions indicate a global shortfall in LNG supplies. The Technip-Samsung consortium working on the Prelude FLNG vessel that is the prototype for the Browse development has won the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for this project.
