Burst mode transceiver IC for GEPON, GPON systems

Phyworks (Bristol, UK) recently released its PHY1078, a highly integrated optical interface IC designed for use in PON and customer premises FTTX applications. "We wanted to develop a part for the higher-volume end of the link, the ONU [optical-network unit] —that was our starting point," explains Phyworks product-line manager Brad Weaterton. "We had already developed continuous wave products and had a number of blocks of circuitry available to us already from those programs. We used as much of that as we could, whilst developing some new IP specifically for the burst mode laser application and to meet the standards."
