In many respects, tourism is a function of asset management. What assets does a city have to offer and how can they be leveraged? Hong Kong offers a prime exam- ple. Proximity to water is always desirable- Hong Kong has the Victoria Harbour-and a distinctive skyline is also beneficial. The Hong Kong Tourism Commission discovered the best way to maximize these two assets was through light -more specifi-cally through a light show, which premiered in January during the Chinese New Year and is now running nightly. "Symphony of Lights" is the brainchild of the Tourism Commission and consultant Laservision, Dural New South Wales, Australia. In August 2002, the commission asked the entertainment communications company to develop a plan creating a permanent light show based on the illumination of significant buildings in Hong Kong and Kowloon, which overlook Victoria Harbor. The harbor is possibly the most significant natural asset for the 18 million tpurists that currently visit Hong Kong each year. The study represented the first time consideration was given to exploiting this asset in such a high visible and coordinated way.
