Light is the star at the new Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, Seattle's upgraded and redesigned opera house. Architect Mark Reddington of MLN Architects in Seattle says the project had the "most extensive focus on lighting of any he has worked on." Reddington who has designed many performance centers, says his design intent was to draw people in, to relate to other buildings and public spaces in the Seattle Center and to extend the stage performance to the public outside. A collaboration of three lighting design firms and consultants joined together under MLN on a spectacular lighting design that dominates the building aesthetics. The changes at McCaw Hall began with a mandated seismic upgrade, to which other refurbishing was added as far as the modest $127 million budget allowed. In addition to the new five-story high glass facade that curves along a promenade, many interior improvements were made on acoustics, sightlines and backstage areas. But the lighting dramatizes and enhances the structural changes, and building seems wholly transformed.
