Lighting for a memorial honoring September 11 victims overcame political, aesthetic and technical challenges. The lighting challenge for a sculpture commemorating 9/11 was almost as monumental as the monument itself. The 11-sided base of highly polished black granite stands 11-ft tall with the massive bronze structure 100 ft above that. Carved into the base are the names of those that died on that day five years ago. The small plaza that surrounds this base has nine stripes of paving stones, symbolizing the date of 9/11.
