The Falls Bridge measures a mere 600 ft-a small stretch of road in Philadelphia's vast network of streets and highways. Yet there is no correlation between the size of the bridge and its importance to the community. And that explains why so much effort-and debate-went into illuminating it. "The bridge is a linchpin in moving cars across the Schuykill River, and bicyclists and runners use it continuously," says Sandra Stashik, principal, Grenald Waldron Associates, Narberth, PA. "It's an important part of the fabric of the city."
