Let's Phase Out Phase Control Dimmers

The "super lamp" specification discussed in the excellent article by Fernandes, Siminovitch and Papamichael (LD+A, March, "Research Matters") describes a lamp power factor requirement, while also requiring that the lamps be dimmable on standard residential dimmers. The L Prize Program requirements also impose a similar power factor requirement on the lamp, while simultaneously requiring that the lamps be dimmable on "widely available residential dimmers." However, current generation dimmers create low power factor on the power input side of the dimmer that is incompatible with the goal and intent of these high-performance lamp specifications.
