Hiring managers need not feel helpless if they have a reluctant warrior on their hands. When extending a verbal offer, always set a start date set at the same time. You can always shift it one or two weeks forward or backward if a candidate's current employer would like them to stay one more week to wrap up loose ends, or have your candidate start earlier if they are released by their company after giving notice (which often occurs if a candidate is going to a direct competitor).
