The lighting profession has been strongly impacted by complex energy codes for space-by-space indoor occupancies and outdoors, which were first promulgated by the DOE, then issued and updated every three years by two different code writing committees-IECC and ASHRAE/IES-leaving it to municipalities to choose which issue of which version of the code to adopt into law. Now, manufacturers of controls want to embed multiple sensors in our ubiquitous luminaires to measure room ambient temperature, humidity, traffic, sales and whatever. We have to resolve which trade will service the sensors and how technicians will be trained to maintain the wide variety of them. When the mass of data is collected and scrutinized, will it lead to paralysis by analysis?
