UKTram: Finding a clear way ahead - Industry and government are working closely together to sort out light rail's ills and move forward

No-one would say that it has been a good couple of years for the UK light rail business, but energetic activity behind the scenes is enabling professionals to create a national body to act as a single voice. UKTram's origins date back to 2003 and a time of optimism in the tramway sector, with the Nottingham Express Transit system nearing completion, and many more schemes being proposed around the country. Tramways were on the up, and we were increasingly active in the wider European scene through initiatives such as LiRa and Libertin, promoting contacts across the EU and the goal of harmonisation of standards, What emerged from this busy time was a realisation that the UK industry had developed a singular ability to reinvent itself with every new system built. It also proposed finding new, and often unproven solutions, to very similar problems.
