FEVE'S HYDROGEN TRAM

Thursday 13 October saw Spanish metre-gauge operator FEVE roll-out rebuilt tram 3411 (originally Vicinal S 9745) refitted with a hydrogen fuel cell-powered traction system developed and installed by the Cidaut foundation and Fenit Rail. Prototype H2-3400 has been converted at FEVE's Pravia workshops by Fenit Rail (in which FEVE holds a 37.5% shareholding) at a cost of EUR 1 m - supported by the regional government of the Principality of As-turias in Northern Spain.The two-year project underlines FEVE's commitment to the investigation and application of alternative energy sources; the state-owned company is also working on solar-powered rail vehicles with the University of Leon.
