Monday 2 December 2013 was a landmark date in Edinburgh as the first modern tram inched its way into the heart of the Scottish capital. In just four months time, the political frenzy, the years of contractual disputes and a hefty bill of GBP776m (approx. EUR927m) for 14.4km (8.7 miles) of line with 16 stops will hopefully be pushed to the back of our minds when regular operations commence between the city centre and Edinburgh Airport. It's so far, so good with the trial running, initially carried out in the early morning hours to avoid road traffic. In addition to familiarising tram crews and operational staff before the full service can be implemented, the system is undertaking emergency exercises, and technical and infrastructure tests to make sure everything goes smoothly from day one.
