Caen is 200km (125 miles) west of Paris, located around two hours by rail from Paris-Saint- Lazare. It is the capital of Calvados department, as it was for Basse-Normandie until Rouen took that role for the combined Normandie region in 2016. The city's 11th Century rise to prominence owed much to sea access and military exploitation of its high ground. Another convergence of these factors led to extreme destruction when German forces made Caen a defensive stronghold following the June 1944 Normandy landings.
