Controversy continues in the placement of a firm order for 100 new trams for the Romanian capital, Bucuresti (Bucharest), following the news that Turkish company Durmazlar has been awarded preferred bidder status for the RON856m contract (approx. EUR180m). The city's tender conditions, published in December 2018, stated that 'the average annual turnover of the tenderer over the last three years shall be at least RON280m [EUR58.5m]', leading Arad-based Astra Vagoane to partner with China's CRRC Qingdao Sifang to meet the criterion. Thus two offers were received: Durmazlar with its Panorama model and the Romanian-Chinese partnership using an adaptation of the Imperio vehicle supplied by Astra Vagoane to its home city (a collaboration with Siemens).
