Alstom unveils new Citadis XO5

Fifteen years ago, the French city of Bordeaux unveiled its Alstom Citadis trams fitted with the APS surface contact current collection system, a technology that has since been used in other French cities and exported as far as Dubai, Rio de Janeiro and Sydney.Although Alstom is set to merge its rail activities with Siemens (see page 166), the firm chose mid-March to formally unveil the latest version of the Citadis, designated X05, as well as the new surface power collection system SRS. The X05 has a top speed of 80km/h (50mph) and claims to use 25% less energy than its predecessors as well as offering a reduction in maintenance costs of up to 18%.Larger windows and doors enhance the passenger experience.
