Our staff I A, Mike Berry, recently visited three shops-an instrument shop and two overhaulers. There was a common thread of advice for customers sending parts in for repair/overhaul from all three shops. Each shop stated that shipping damage in transit is worse now than ever before. The problem is a very high occurrence of damage occurring during transit to merchandise shipped to them for repair. The damage comes in two forms-externally visible rough handling/dropping, and internal damage to the items from either careless or insufficient packing by the owners of the parts with no serious visible external damage to the shipping box. They cited examples of engine cases shipped in thin-wall cardboard boxes, with newspapers stuffed in here and there for padding. The same lack of preparation has been used for cranks and other easily damaged items because they are inherently so heavy. These items need serious packing with the proper shipping boxes. One issue that is especially prevalent is the shipping of multiple cylinders in the same cardboard box with only newspaper padding between cylinders. This just doesn't work.
