The English victory at the battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513 prompted a range of immediate responses, in manuscript and print, in English and Latin, in verse and prose.1 What was very likely the earliest account of the English victory was an undated prose one issued by Richard Faques, The trewe encounter or Batayle lately betwene Englande and Scotland {STC 11088.5), probably published in 1513. It comprised six leaves printed in quarto, a full sheet and a half sheet, with a woodcut on the opening page;2 the edition survives in a single complete, albeit made-up copy and various fragments.3
