The mission of public and academic libraries is based on participation in information and media, in skilling competences and qualification, and on discourses in education, society, culture, and science. In the course of profound social upheavals, including the digital transformation, participation is essential and it is based on the values of our democratic society. Library associations adopt this mission increasingly and contribute to its visibility in their political communication as well as by promoting their members. In this way, associations develop into communities in which the commitment of individual members is required increasingly. The common mission strengthens associations and members, and bestow the common goals their social status.
