"I had to fight at simon & schuster for a cover you could see from 12' away," Paco Underhill told a roomful of librarians at Day of Dialog at BookExpo America last month (see p. 17). Even the progenitor of the "science of shopping" and the author of Why We Buy and The Call of the Mall had to convince his publisher that display matters. "Everyone is competing with everyone else for attention," he says. If the guru of shopping, consultant to the likes of Starbucks, Citibank, and Blockbuster, as well as the Phoenix Zoo and OPERA America, has trouble making his point about capturing customers, what's a library to do?
