For years, librarians ran toward the holy grail of information. If libraries were information warehouses, then librarians were information gurus, purveyors, and guides to everything users needed or wanted to know both in print and online. Despite rising circulation statistics for books and other library materials (after a brief stumble in the late 1990s), the focus on information and information technology pervaded the field. Then along came the Internet, turning the "information guide" concept on its head.
