摘要

The plot of this charmer makes sense within its mall setting: poor but talented girl working in her mom's music store meets even poorer but talented boy who collects the trash after the mall closes. Girl writes song but doesn't realize how good it is. Boy finds song in the trash and plays it with his crew, a rock band looking for a break. Enter the daughter of the mall owner-a spoiled brat happy to squash the girl and steal the boy, his band, and the song in order to win the approval of her seltcentered dad. Public libraries wishing to capture the interest of young teens should buy The American Mall. The quality of the performances is high, it'll get oodles of circulations, and the price is right. It seems to speak directly to the generation of this reviewer's grandchildren for whom the library's leisure-time materials may be starting to seem either too babyish or too staid and prudish. Highly recommended for YAs.
