History repeats itself historical mysteries, after a slight hiatus, have come back strong. Victorian thrillers and mysteries set at the turn of the 20th century are especially popular with writers, publishers, and readers. Jeanne M. Dams sets her Hilda Johansson series (Indigo Christmas) in 1904 South Bend, IN. Clare Langley-Hawtorne's new Ursula Marlow series (The Serpent and the Scorpion) deals with the suffragette movement in 1912 London. Maan Meyers (The Organ Grinder) tackles the emergence of the Mafia in 1899 New York City, while debut author Claude Izner uses the 1899 World Exposi-rntion in Paris as the backdrop for Murder on the Eiffel Tower. But other eras are not ignored, as evidenced by Cora Harrison's A Secret and Unlawful Killing, a historical set in medieval Ireland, and Axel Brand's 1940s period piece, The Hotel Dick.
