Elk River Sets Gold Standard

Elk River, MN, has copyright on the title "Energy City" and a high level of energy awareness to go with it. It's also big on its library, a branch of Great River Regional Library, a consolidated system in which communities provide their own library buildings. When it needed to expand the library, Elk River decided that rather than invest in a building landlocked by residential property, it would build new and in terms of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. When it opened in 2007, it became the first library and only the second building in Minnesota designed to receive LEED Gold certification.
