Today's libraries are more than simply places for checking out books. They are community hot spots for cultural events, readings, children's programs, tutoring services, and art exhibits. They provide library patrons with access to multimedia resources, computers, the Internet, ebooks, and other technology services. So why do so many libraries nationwide still operate as if book checkout is the only service they offer?rnAnd why do they devote so much of their personnel to standing behind circulation desks performing repetitive checkin and checkout duties?rnAs library collections and the number of patrons grow, library employees often face increasing demands without the benefit of increasing budgets. There's often not enough time to have any kind of quality interaction with patrons. In San Bernardino County, CA, we sought to address these issues.
