摘要

Debuting to much acclaim when it was first announced in January 2008, the Flickr Pilot Project from the Library of Congress (LC) has now released a summary report of its first nine months.rnThe project launched with an initial upload of about 1500 images of the Great Depression and historical New York City with "no known copyright restrictions" to an area of Flickr called The Commons as an experiment to increase public access and awareness of LC's digital collections.rnThe results? Many of the LC images are surfacing at higher ranks in search engines since the pilot began, and stats show that the photos have been viewed more than ten million times, averaging more than 500,000 views a month.rnThe most significant finding may be the clear evidence that Flickr members are doing more than just viewing the photos: users have added some 67,000 tags to items in the collection and have left more than 7000 comments on the images. Often, these comments include corrections or contextual information, some of which has been reviewed by LC staff and incorporated right back into the LC item records themselves.
