One obvious criterion for being a classic is awards. Several awards lists were used in the compilation of this filmography, including those from the American Film Institute, National Film Registry, Academy Awards, and Cannes and classic film lists by noted critics such as Leonard Maltin and Roger Ebert. All the works of well-known and noted directors, actors, and actresses should be considered as well. Every library should have a sampling of directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Akira Kurosawa, actors like James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, and actresses like Bette Davis and Katharine (or Audrey) Hepburn. Representing a wide range of genres is also essential.
