Established in 1935 by Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf to reflect her family's commitment to social justice, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards honor literary works that confront racism and celebrate diversity. This year's just-announced winners-chosen by jury chair Henry Louis Gates Jr. and his fellow jurors poet Rita Dove, novelist Joyce Carol Oates, psychologist Steven Pinker, and historian Simon Schama-often veer across race, class, and gender lines as they notably diversify the very concept of diversity.
