Early on, 1 knew that the book was going to be the kind sewn together in my art laboratory from the midnight-harvested remains of dead saints, criminals, myths, and monsters. Like the good Dr. Frankenstein, I used the ingredients that appealed to me most, and I did a lot of research and remained open to the places [where] that research led me. I drew experiences from my own life and from the lives of others and from stories that resonated with me and had always haunted me.
