The critical scene in The Sowing-which starts the action of the entire trilogy-came from a dream she had. [It] was set in the ruins of an old building and involved blasters and laser guns-clearly something from the future. A rag-tag group of fighters was pitted against a small military troop, and it was clear that there was romantic tension between one of the rebels and one of the men from the military. She shared the dream with [my sister] Elena and wanted to turn it into a story, so she and Elena sat down and hashed it out, creating a climactic battle scene from the perspective of a rebel heroine named Remy. Then life got in the way, and the rest of the story never materialized.
