Mobile Telephony in Nigeria

The GSM, which facilitates easy and quick exchange of information between users, was introduced into Nigeria in 2001. Since that beginning an increasing number of inhabitants have been obtaining mobile phone lines and using the technology for communication. At present, there are four operators - MTN, Econet, M-Tel (owned by NITEL) and Globacom. Though an increasing number of Nigeria dwellers are hooked to the networks, the operators still need to ensure that problems of interconnectivity, limited mobile coverage, high cost of services, shortage of trained and qualified manpower, poor financial capital etc. are tackled so that Nigerians can take full advantage of mobile telephony.
