Digitization projects in university libraries in Nigeria: the journey so far

Digitization refers to the conversion of an item - be it printed text, manuscripts, image of sound film and video recording - from one format (usually print or analogue) into digital (Parekh, 2001). According to Sonawane (2003, p. 1) "Digitization is electronic snapshots taken of a scene or scanned from documents, such as photographs, manuscripts, printed text, and artwork". Modern ICT makes it possible to gain access to a wide range of information resources irrespective of where you are. Bansode (2008) identified the aims of the creation of digital library of manuscripts at Shivaji University, India as follows: to increase access; to improve services to an expanding users group; and to reduce the handling and use of fragile or heavily used original material and create a "back-up" copy.
