The Italian Leathergoods collections for winter 2000 were launched in March at the 75th Mipel exhibition. Sentiments continue to be dominated by the weakness of the Far East markets and the need to find an alternative to the quality message while restricting prices. For the second season in a row there was every indication that individual companies are finding it difficult to come to terms with the new realities of price sensitivity. Austerity in Japan and a ground swell of younger consumers who are style-driven rather than quality conscious has changed the way many traditional companies are approaching design.
