Indian leather sector to benefit from rise in Chinese labour costs

India's leather sector expects exports to rise sharply in the coming years thanks to escalating labour costs in China and neighbouring countries. Labour costs in Bangladesh and Vietnam are also much higher than in India, and the country hopes to capitalise in the near future. The average monthly labour cost in India is roughly $150, compared with around $450 per month in China. As a result, major players currently importing leather goods from China are shifting their focus to the Indian market, according to PR Aqeel Ahmed, chairman of India's Council for Leather Exports.
