Productivity is a term that you might hear and read about several times a day. Yet, as Indiana University Kelley School of Business emeritus professor Roger W. Schmenner writes in his article "The Pursuit of Productivity," in Production and Operations Management (2014), "For something so important, productivity is not as well understood as it needs to be." He believes that "productivity is poorly understood because you can pull many different levers but you don't really know which ones will work. Differences in measurement and differences among industries certainly don't help the cause."
