The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, has created the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, which would now be responsible for managing telecom operators in the country. The operators have until now been overseen by the Fondo de Solidaridad (Solidarity Fund). Mr. Correa said that this new framework would unite the public firms, subsecretariats, and control and regulatory agencies under one entity. The Ministry of Telecom and IT would undertake the responsibility of managing Pacifictel, Andinatel, Alegro, and also the Civil Registry and Post offices. Currently, as many as four agencies enjoy regulatory powers: National Radio and Television Council (Conartel), National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), the National Telecommunications Secretariat (Senatel), and the Telecommunications Superintendency (Suptel).
