Telmex eyes broadband speed boost to retain subscribers

Mexican fixed-line incumbent Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) has revealed plans to quadruple broadband speeds in some of the country to up to 20Mbps. With a view to persuading existing customers to stay with the telco, rather than migrating to alternative operators, Andres Vazquez del Mercado, Telmex's residential markets director, has said that his company aims to extend its fiber-optic network closer to homes in order to boost speeds. Of the MXN10 billion (US$761.8 million) set aside for investment in 2010 by the telco, "most" is to go towards Internet improvements, the executive noted.
