The introductions of mobile number portability (MNP) in Guatemala could become a reality if a proposed reform to the existing tele-coms act is successful. A local legislator, Francisco Contreras, has filed the amendment to the General Law of Telecommunications (Decree 94-96), which would allow mobile subscribers to obtain ownership of their numbers within nine months, then allow them to transfer the number free of charge to any other provider.rnSuch legislation could benefit the 13 million mobile users signed up to one of the five mobile network operators currently offering commercial services in Guatemala.
