Argentina's state-owned satellite operator ARSAT has been enlisted to bring low-cost broadband access to 1,200 localities throughout the country- including 100 that have never been connected to the Internet. According to ARSAT CEO Rodrigo de Loredo, the project will cost a total of ARS4.53 billion (US$308 million), of which the bulk (ARS3.66 billion) will be used to connect the rural localities to the country's in-deployment Federal Fiber-Optic Network (Red Federal de Fibra Optica, REFEFO). The remaining funds will be set aside for maintenance costs.
