TV Azteca permitted to trial 5G in Mexico City, Guadalajara

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones, IFT) has reportedly given Grupo Salinas-backed TV Azteca permission to trial 5G-based broadcast solutions in Tlalpan, Mexico City and at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara. According to El Economista, the media company has been granted spectrum in the 3350MHz-3450MHz (3.5GHz) band, which it can use for a period of six months. America Movil (AM)-backed mobile giant Telcel acquired a 50MHz block of 5G-suitable 3.5GHz spectrum from domestic fixed line operator Axtel earlier this year, taking its total holdings in that band to 100MHz. US-owned mobile rival AT&T holds frequencies in the 3550MHz-3600MHz band, meanwhile.
