Mexican operators offer prepay users free calls and SMS bundle for coronavirus

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has announced a number of measures to mitigate the health crisis unleashed by the coronavirus outbreak, including a free prepay bundle to be offered by the country's leading operators. The watchdog has reached an agreement with Telcel (America Movil), AT&T Mexico and Movistar (Telefonica) to make a available a free prepay plan to all their prepay users with "at least" 100 minutes of calls and 150 SMS with a view to ensuring they stay connected during the emergency. Some 83 percent of Mexico's 121 million mobile lines are currently prepaid, according to the IFT's own figures. The regulator has also activated a dedicated website with full details of all the initiatives launched by operators for their customers during the lockdown.
