EC commits to completing new EU-Latin America undersea cable by 2020

The European Commission announced that the contract to build a fiber-optic cable connecting Latin America and Europe (from Portugal to Brazil) has entered into force and the transatlantic link should be operational by 2020. The BELLA (building the Europe Link to Latin America) Consortium, an international partnership of research and education networks whose leading investor is the European Commission, is a key participant in a project that is also aiming to boost interconnectivity between Latin American countries, initially Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.
