摘要

A myth is that academics evolve a discipline singlehandedly. Language certainly has its groundbreaking pioneers, great thinkers and brilliant researchers. This journal has witnessed a flow of innovation and creative contributions from such celebrated academics. But the idea that academics solely develop a topic or a discipline is at best a half truth. The life, influence and legacy of Mike Grover, publisher and pioneer, reveal a fuller truth. Mike had an enormous impact on the study of language (e.g. bilingualism, minority languages, language education) through developing many book series and journals. This involved much risk-taking and financial perils, but also great vision and a sixth sense as to topics that would be fashionable and would mushroom in decades ahead.
