Language attitudes of Asturian students in the area of Navia-Eo (Spain)

This paper presents a synthesis of a pioneering study that approaches the sociolinguistic and educational reality of the area of Navia-Eo, a region in the western part of Asturias (Spain). This research aims to provide an insight into the language attitudes and the sociolinguistic awareness of students in the final year of primary education. Using a sample of 217 subjects, the paper examines the awareness of the use of the traditional language (Galician-Asturian) as well as the official national language (Spanish). Results indicate a substantial level of use of both languages, as well as particularly positive attitudes to language.%Este artículo presenta una síntesis de un estudio pionero en el que se aborda la realidad educativa y sociolingüística de la zona del Navia-Eo, en la parte occidental de Asturias (España). Esta investigación tiene como objetivo proporcionar una visión rigurosa de las actitudes lingüísticas y !a conciencia socio-lingüística de alumnos del último curso de Educación Primaria. Utilizando una muestra de 217 alumnos, el trabajo analiza la conciencia en el uso de la lengua tradicional (Gallego-Asturiano) así como la lengua oficial (Castellano). Los resultados indican un nivel aceptable en el uso de ambas lenguas así como actitudes especialmente positivas hacia ellas.
