URBAN SPRING

A natural spring that gives up ioo gallons of water a day comes out of this house's foundation in a crowded part of San Francisco. Rather than send it away in pipes, the design inserted various devices such as runnels and chains to move the water downhill through a small, shady garden to supply trees and wet-footed plants such as Japanese bloodgrass and watercress around a small lawn. Floating stairs and a boardwalk take you down the slope.
