The neighborhood is all-important where the One Central Park tower rises in Sydney, as it has been at least since 1835, when the Kent Brewery was established on this site. Kent, one of the oldest and most successfully breweries in Sydney, eventually employed nearly 2,000 workers of 19 different nationalities. In 1983 it was bought by the brewer Carlton & United, so most people today remember it by that name. The neighborhood around the brewery has long been vibrant, working class, and productive, in large part because the company that dominated it was known as a secure, family-centered place to work long before unions came along.
