In this wonderfully capacious and attentive study of the cultural landscapes of faith and doubt, the architectural historian Margaret M. Grubiak shows us how the everyday expressions of Christian-based religious belief and their antagonists are mutually reinforced in the built environment. Looking at phenomena such as the "Touchdown Jesus" mural at the University of Notre Dame, Kentucky's Creation Museum, and the soaring Christ of the Ozarks statue in Arkansas, Grubiak deftly explores the way in which satire, mass media, and shifting social mores create meanings that are often unintended and wildly inventive.
