Implementing Low Impact Development in a Rural County

Many rural counties will face the pressures of growth that New Kent is facing today. As is being experienced during this year's drought, ground water withdrawals in the future or use of potable water from municipal sources for irrigation might need to be limited. Identifying ways to capture rain water close to the source may help reduce the demand for this water and ease the impacts of development. The success of incorporating LID in the design was experienced in New Kent; between 1997 ' and 2005 three projects had been constructed in the County used LID practices. Since the publication of the manual in 2005 five projects have incorporated LID into their design.
