Lake Shasta Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems

Northern California's Shasta Lake, the largest reservoir in the state, is a haven for recreational activity. One of the most popular activities on the lake is the houseboat vacation. Families and groups from throughout California and the western United States travel to Shasta Lake to rent a houseboat for a weekend, a week, or longer. Several privately owned marinas provide sizeable fleets of houseboats for rent. In recent years, houseboats with built in hot tubs have become very popular. Prior to September 2006, houseboats and marinas were allowed to discharge grey water, including hot tub water, directly into the lake. As the number of visitors using these houseboats increased, improved disposal practices were needed to preserve water quality and protect the sensitive environment around the lake.
