摘要

Few recognize or even consider that the island of Manhattan, although tamed and paved beyond all recognition, was once the dense and diverse home to several native habitats and species. Starting in 2006 Great Eastern Ecology (GEE), commenced a NYC funded, $700,000 restoration of a salt marsh on Randall's Island - an island off the northeast portion of Manhattan. The salt marsh restoration site is at the Northern point of Randall's Island and stretches roughly one acre. The restoration was done primarily in three phases. First in 2006, the land of the restoration site was graded to appropriate elevations and dimensions. Second, protective barriers were constructed to protect the wetland environment and last, carefully selected plant species were planted throughout the marsh in the summer of 2008.
